Very handy if you live too close to a sewage plant or spend any time around teenage boys.
Et·som·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once per week.
I am obsessed – OBSESSED – with Project Runway. So a couple of weeks ago when the most recent season was over, I was sad, sad, sad. I realized I’d have to go looking for my goofy avant garde fix elsewhere. Etsy to the rescue! Sure, there’s the usual overworked Etsy junk, but this search turned up so much more than I dared to hope for. Like giant bumblebees, crotch owls (not a bad band name), buttocks in unexpected places, angry pandas, and pants with a guest room. But it’s not all bad. There were some amazing, creative, fascinating pieces. I may not be able to pull them off, but they sure are fun to look at!

For the woman who has everything: a top with room for your partially-formed unborn twin!

Okay. Plastic skirt. I get it. But what do you say when it fogs up?

Hair extensions: you’re doing it wrong.

Very handy if you have a jar that needs opening.

iIve seen clothing before that reminded me of an ugly sofa, but this is the first one that comes with pillows!

Unwearable to be sure, but really fascinating!

It’s cold and flu season, so don’t forget your tissues!

Just because it’s ISSEY MIYAKE doesn’t mean it’s not crazy.

How thrilling is this collar? By FedRaDD

Awkward? Sure. But at least it’s got its own theme song!

Rubber rompers – now with wings!

One of the keys to good fashion design is a working understanding of anatomy. Human anatomy.

I hear wet dog is very in this season.

I’m really conflicted about this one. On the one hand, it’s cute AND made by one of my favorite Etsy sellers. On the other, it looks like I made a last-minute costume using a bathing suit and office supplies.

There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on this. If it’s this look you’re after, just go to the nearest housewares store.

Reader captions are back. Do your worst!

You like Project Runway? Despite my complete lack of fashion sense, I enjoy the show as well–actually, I really like the Jr.s Last year’s run was marked by a complete lack of cattiness and such earnest compliments–this year doesn’t seem to be as nice, but it is early.
As for the first outfit…I think that space is to put your purse, or your phone, or your laptop.
As for the Rubber Romper with wings…It has a kind of sex appeal….just maybe more fun at home than out.
As always, love your finds.

I’m enjoying junior, too, though most of their clothes are painful. I spend a lot of time yelling “crooked seams” at the tv. It’s as close as I get to sports.

I can’t be so critical about seams, or zippers or anything technical because I can’t sew. However, I do find it entertaining and I appreciate that for some of these young people it is there first chance to connect with people who are more like them, and who might better understand them.
Besides, I don’t know how good their home ec (It probably isn’t call this anymore, but it was called “family studies” –perhaps even less politically correct) teachers are or how much technique is taught because creativity and risk taking are over praised–perhaps not overpraised, but praised to the detriment of solid foundations and mastering the basics.

That’s an excellent, thoughtful, mature point, but it won’t stop me from yelling at the tv. It’s fun!

Isn’t it fantastic? Beloved hates it as much as I love it, so I’m not allowed to watch it when she’s in the room EVEN IF SHE’S SLEEPING. So unfair.

So glad for recording capabilities. I save it and then spend time watching several at once.

Sometimes it makes me feel a little sad to think of people devoting so much time and energy to crafting such abysmal shit.

Sure, but they’re (presumably) doing what makes them happy, so it can’t be all bad, right? They certainly entertain me!

I am also sure some of those Etsy makers at least (maybe all) could look at my art work and have the exact same thoughts.

I can’t look at the plastic skirt because the sandals are SO fugly!!! And I don’t think the Miyake is as bad as the pose makes it seem . . . maybe.

I waited a full 24 hours to come up with some words to attach to that last one. Just. Not. Possible. Am I right that the search phrase you used to come up with these gems was “Are You F*@#ing Kidding Me?”
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Project Runway. What I wouldn’t give to hear Nina (and Michael Kors) critique this line up.
