An enterprising group of Julliard music and dance students, led by my guy Yo Yo Ma, have recorded a brilliant video of Ravel’s Bolero. Alongside the students, musical giants including Itzhak Perlman, Emanuel Ax, Jon Batiste, and Yo Yo Ma lend a hand. There are also surprise (comedic) appearances by the likes of Renee Fleming, Patti LuPone, Bradley Whitford, Bebe Neuwirth, Christine Baranski, and Laura Linney. And every time I watch it, I spot more surprises!
Conducted by David Robertson, Julliard’s Director of Conducting Studies, the video was directed and choreographed by Larry Keigwin and Nicole Wolcott of KEIGWIN + COMPANY, and the music was arranged by Hamilton‘s Music Director, Kurt Crowley.

I want to give it a ten!! One of my favorite music and they had a great sound. Yes, he is also one of my all time favorites. Yo Yo Ma is always super. Super great post today. The arrangement was a little different and a nice change for a couple of bars. Hal

That was an absolute joy! I loved the creativity within the performances, the moments of levity, and – as Beverly noted above – that is some top notch coordination and editing work that went into post-production in particular. This and similar musical productions are making me even more emotional than usual during Shelter in Place. Watching this video, I found myself wondering if it is because nothing more potently encapsulated the weird dislocation of “separately together” than performers who would usually be part of a group having to make individual contributions to a group project. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, bravo! This was wonderful.

I totally get you. For me, it’s all those little boxes. They’re a big part of my work life and my social life, and now they’re where we’re getting our creative input, too. It’s a perfect representation of our own four walls. I’m always grateful when someone comes up with a new way to interpret all those little boxes.
