What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Classical Magic

Bolero Julliard

An enterprising group of Julliard music and dance students, led by my guy Yo Yo Ma, have recorded a brilliant video of Ravel’s Bolero. Alongside the students, musical giants including Itzhak Perlman, Emanuel Ax, Jon Batiste, and Yo Yo Ma lend a hand. There are also surprise (comedic) appearances by the likes of Renee Fleming, Patti LuPone, Bradley Whitford, Bebe Neuwirth, Christine Baranski, and Laura Linney. And every time I watch it, I spot more surprises!

Conducted by David Robertson, Julliard’s Director of Conducting Studies, the video was directed and choreographed by Larry Keigwin and Nicole Wolcott of KEIGWIN + COMPANY, and the music was arranged by Hamilton‘s Music Director, Kurt Crowley.

  1. I want to give it a ten!! One of my favorite music and they had a great sound. Yes, he is also one of my all time favorites. Yo Yo Ma is always super. Super great post today. The arrangement was a little different and a nice change for a couple of bars. Hal

  2. I just can’t imagine how to go about putting something like this together. Must take hours. Fun to watch. Great talent.

  3. That was an absolute joy! I loved the creativity within the performances, the moments of levity, and – as Beverly noted above – that is some top notch coordination and editing work that went into post-production in particular. This and similar musical productions are making me even more emotional than usual during Shelter in Place. Watching this video, I found myself wondering if it is because nothing more potently encapsulated the weird dislocation of “separately together” than performers who would usually be part of a group having to make individual contributions to a group project. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, bravo! This was wonderful.

    • I totally get you. For me, it’s all those little boxes. They’re a big part of my work life and my social life, and now they’re where we’re getting our creative input, too. It’s a perfect representation of our own four walls. I’m always grateful when someone comes up with a new way to interpret all those little boxes.
