Many people end up traveling by air in the days leading up to major holidays, and Christmas seems to be the most popular/perilous time for these travels. Some are trying to get to family, some are trying to get away from them, but all will no doubt agree that it’s the worst time of the year to travel. Delays, weather, and impossible airport overcrowding all contribute to make most people’s travel experience extra awful.
Recently, New York Times illustrator Christoph Niemann flew from New York City to Berlin with a stopover in London. Lucky for us, he illustrated his experience.
Happy trails to all who have to travel by air (or train or car) this holiday season!

Another ode to my mantra, “there’s no place like home.” Safe travels to the rest of you!

I take that to mean you’re staying home. Very sensible of you!

Turns out we all think the same things when we’re traveling. Although he did leave off the inevitable neighbor with the smelly homemade food.

Great fun. But as leannenz seems to be indicating, you haven’t done long haul till you’ve done the 30 hours or so from Heathrow to NZ. Me, I just watch movies. But even that wears thin.

30 hours! Good grief! I think if I had to do that regularly, I’d rent a flat in Nepal and create my own layover.

He is a very talented illustrator anyway, and the way he documented this journey made me laugh 🙂

Me, too. It’s certainly an interesting way to pass the time while stuck on a plane!

Love! These are very awesome sketches and very relateable. I feel inspired. I should visually record my next flight in my art journal. It will just be lots of drawings of my kids interrupting me so that I can neither watch a movie or read a book.

My partner got home to Canberra yesterday after 60hrs to and from Lancaster in the UK in a week and in between laughter said ‘this bloke has been in my head’
Happy Christmas to you and your beloved and thank you for a year of beautiful things.

The last few weeks have been ridiculously busy and included a trip by car to Denver and back. The way up, we did in one day, we being me, my younger son and his girlfriend. The way back I did in two days, traveling with my parents, who were in their own car but took turns riding with me. I will leave the effect on my emotional state to your imagination.

Yike. Click your heels together and say it with me. “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” Then take a deep breath and drink something stiff.
